about

Sometimes, things don’t go to plan.

I’m not one of those people who tends to be particularly laid back about this: while I’m more than comfortable with all the possibilities of happenstance when collaborating, when it comes to my own work, everything is organised, controlled, rehearsed, planned to the minutest detail.

This was my first time out using new kit. Having previously performed solo noise-and-shouting sets using a laptop programme, I recently acquired a Geiger Lab oscillator / noise generating thingummy from Resonance Circuits, and was keen to try something different after some time out.

To my horror, despite all of the elements coming through my headphones moments before, neither drum machine nor vocals were coming out of the mixer into the PA, and I was presented with the option to take a break and see if I could fix the issue, to give up and go home, or to plough on and step way out of my comfort zone and improvise. Rooted to the spot, the sound engineer trying to find the problem and at my elbow on stage asking questions, I chose the third of these. And so, with the Geiger Lab, and additional extraneous noise and feedback emanating from a contact mic resting on the circuit, I played.

This is a document of that unique and unexpected set, which was recorded simultaneously via the desk and in the room.

The first track is both sources tracked together, which gives a rounded recreation of the experience – with enough room ambience to capture the atmosphere, but not so much atmosphere that audience noise is too much of an impedance. Beyond the editing required to combine the recordings, there has been no other editing or alteration of the sound: this is as it happened – a happy accident, but one I’m not keen to repeat in a hurry.

The other two tracks are self-explanatory: the desk and room recordings, warts and all.

This performance took place at The Fulford Arms in York on 6th March 2024. Recordings courtesy of Simon Hickinbotham and John Tuffen. Cover image by Dave Walker..
