about

Grief manifests in many unexpected ways. There is no ‘right’ or ‘wrong’ approach. You simply do what you need to do to manage. And this is what I need to do. Sometimes, you need to carve a detachment from a situation in order to keep things together.

Last Days – Part Two is perhaps the predictable counterpart to Last Days – Part One, released in March, the tracks all built around a short recording of the oxygen machines that occupied our living room for the two nights my wife returned home from a ten day stay in hospital, before being taken to a hospice where she died from fiercely aggressive stage 4 breast cancer.

I had no words then, and while I have words now, many of them feel weak, empty, futile. Nevertheless, I feel compelled to articulate my grief and to use the creative tools at my disposal as a means of not so much coming to terms with things, but simply processing.

The title of the EPs, then, feels fitting, since the first was simply sound, while this second – which again is constructed using manipulations of that same sample – finds me venting my fury amongst a host of many complex emotions. Because I feel the need to vent. I have much rage and this feels like one of the healthier ways of releasing it.

My wife also spent a considerable amount of time during her last year reading, and one of the last books she picked up from the library was, as it so happens, William Faulkner’s The Sound and the Fury.

The release date of 16 July 2023 marks six months since we lost her. The process is ongoing.
